The Farmington Valley - Schools

In my experience the school system in Avon is really excellent. Also the residents of Avon really care about the education of the children. For instance, I went to kindergarten and first grade at an elementary school called Roaring Brook School. The school was becoming over crowded, so the town voted to build an entirely new school called Pine Grove School which is where I finished elementary school. The middle school had been renovated to accommodate the influx of new students already before I was in sixth grade. Then the year before I got to high school they spent millions and millions of dollars redoing the gymnasium, adding a huge science wing, and revamping Avon High School altogether. But as Avon continues to grow the town continues to renovate. In fact, my friend who still lives in Avon told me just a couple weeks ago that they are renovating the high school right now. I checked it out at the Avon High School website and it appears they are building a new media center, a bunch of new classrooms, a new auditorium, a new cafeteria, and even another new gym among many, many other things. They have great pictures of the progress and a more detailed description of what they are doing at the Avon High School website.

Avon High School always took pride in their sports programs too. I played on the football team my first three years there, but we were actually going through a rough stretch. We had three different coaches in three years, but it was still a lot of fun, it was well funded and tons of students and parents showed up to the games. While I was there I would have to say our girls and boys soccer teams were our best sports teams. The boys won the state championship twice during my four years at AHS and the girls won it once. The school also supported the basketball team and filled the gym with fans for home games.

I may not have thought anything of it while I was pulling myself out of bed every morning and dragging myself to school like most high school kids have to do, but Avon High School really prepared me for college. My first couple of years of college going through English I and II, Calculus I and II, History courses and science course were really very easy for me. I credit that one hundred percent to Avon High School preparing me for the next level of education. For an example of the high standards AHS has here is a table comparing the SAT results for AHS students compared to the Connecticut state average in the year that I graduated:

SAT I Class of 2003
AHS State
Percent of Graduates Tested 96.3 76.2
Mathematics: Average Score 567 508
Mathematics: Percent Scoring 600 or More 44.9 23.8
Verbal: Average Score 564 504
Verbal: Percent Scoring 600 or More 39.7 21.1
The information in this table along with a lot more information can be found here.

Because of the great schools more than anything, Avon is a great place to raise children, and it’s also not a bad place to live for kids and adults alike as you can see from the other sections of this site.
