The best pizza in the area can be found at a restaurant called Luna Pizza in Simsbury. I think the most important thing that sets their pizza apart from an ordinary pizza place is that they use delicious, fresh mozzarella instead of the traditional grated cheese. Their pizza sauce is also fantastic, but if you aren't a fan of tomato sauce you can always order a white pizza or if you like barbeque sauce the bbq chicken pizza is the choice for you. When I was growing up in Avon I had a lot of friends that worked as pizza cooks and delivery people for Luna, and just a couple years before I moved away I was lucky enough to meet and become friends with the daughter of the owner of Luna. Another restaurant that's located in the same complex as Luna is Chili's. Chili's are located all over the country, and this one is no different than any other one. They serve great food at affordable prices. Most chain restaurants serve very predictable food such as burgers, sandwiches, salads, and so on. Chili's does serve this kind of food but I think that they have a lot more unique choices than many other chains such as the Awesome Blossom, which is an onion sliced up to look like a blossoming flower and fried like onion rings. This particular Chili's in Simsbury is a nice hangout spot for kids because it's located in the Simsbury Commons, surrounded by shopping and the Hoyts Movie Theater. More Info
Five Guys Burgers and Fries is a restaurant that actually opened in Avon after I moved away. The first time I came back to visit friends after it opened, that was the first place we stopped as we got into town from the airport. When you walk in, there are just giant bags of potatoes and charcoal stacked everywhere. Clearly the message they want to get across is that they make their own french fries and grill up their burgers the good old fashioned way, on charcoal grills. Their menu is extremely simple, consisting of burgers, hotdogs, french fries and soda. They don't make much, but they are very, very good at what they do make. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fries and they handed me a medium sized brown paper bag with my burger, wrapped in foil, under a huge pile of fries that filled up the entire bag. More Info
If you are looking for somewhere to have a more sophisticated dinner, you might want to stop by a restaurant in Avon called Max A Mia. They serve excellent Italian food from pasta and pizza to seafood and pork dishes. It is a very popular place so if you are planning to dine there on a Friday or Saturday night, you would be smart to call ahead and make a reservation. And if you like Max A Mia you should definitely go for a drive to downtown Hartford and check out the similar Max Downtown which was the owner's original restaurant. They have a similar menu but the environment is different because of the larger dining room and the city scene out the windows. More Info
The Dakota Steakhouse is a great place to eat anytime for lunch and dinner, but my best memories of the restaurant are Sunday brunches. You can get brunch there on any Sunday but my family made it an annual event on Mother's Day. Once you are seated the waiter/waitress takes your drink orders and then sets you loose. There are different rooms situated all over the relatively large dining room that have different types of food. There are always a lot of people hovering around the omelet room where you can order eggs made any way imaginable or get an omelet with any of a large list of ingredients. There is a room that usually has a giant roast and a ham with a chef to slice you which ever you would like. As you walk around you will find waffle presses, pastries, fruit, rolls, and then once you think you've eaten all you can eat you find the desert room with all sorts of pies, cakes, jello, candy, and other delicious deserts.
